Book Review - Cowboys Make Better Preachers
Cowboys Make Better Preachers is sort of like an autobiography of the author along with his brother Herman Schreven, his co-author, who writes one chapter of this book. The author explores his personal life stories and draws out important Biblical life lessons from them, not in a serious manner, but in a humourous manner. This book is actually targeted to young ones and teenagers, which you can see in the colours of the book and the beautiful illustrations that accompany each chapter, but according to the author, if the reader is old and reading the book, it means that the reader is young in heart. I like that!
The first chapter |
I really liked the short humour, which is the style of writing employed in this book, and the various jokes dotted around in the chapters. Each chapter talks about memorable and life-changing events in Schreven's childhood, youth, and adulthood and at the end of each, he draws a good lesson out of the experience. He talks about finding love, catching rattlesnakes, building houses, fishing, camping, evangelism, etc., and even a life-changing experience where his whole family could've died (the event changed his life forever). His parents are dear to his heart, and it is very well seen in the book.
I also like the illustrations that accompany the beginning of each chapter. It adds beauty to the already beautiful book! The book with all its jokes and humourous style of writing will guarantee to make the reader laugh. Personally, it didn't make me laugh a lot because the book has a lot of cowboy slang/jargon, which can't be understood unless you look them up. If you didn't catch it already, I didn't understand the slang because I'm not a cowboy, let alone an American. Regardless, I enjoyed the book very much.
One of the many illustrations in the book |
The only thing I didn't like about the book is that it ended. While it would've been nice to have continuity, all things meet a perpetual end, and that's alright. If it didn't end, I wouldn't have been able to even write a review on it!
To sum it all up, this book is about the author's life experiences accompanied by life lessons, written humourously. It is mainly targeted to youth, but even adults (who are children at heart) can read them as well. I would recommend this book to anyone I know because I like it that much.
My rating for this book would be a solid 4/5. It would've been cool to add a glossary of slang terms at the end for readers who aren't cowboys or Americans.
Also, my family bought this book when we were in UAE. Schreven had an All Power seminar in our church and he had brought along his literature to sell to whoever wanted to buy. We bought his All Power seminar CD and workbook, and this amazing autobiography. Below is the autograph he wrote on the first page.
Autograph from the author himself! |
That being said, here ends my first ever book review. Let me know if you're interested in reading more reviews because I am thinking of writing a few every once in a while. Leave a comment down below; I would love to know your thoughts if you have read the book, or if you are considering reading the book. Share this with your friends too.
Thank you always for the love and support.
See you in the next one,
Arnica
